WyzBee is comprehensive Internet of Things solution that includes a flexible hardware platform, development environment, and cloud software and services framework. The compact WyzBee board includes Redpine’s Wireless Secure MCU (WiSeMCU™) with multi-protocol wireless module providing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, and ZigBee connectivity, six-axis inertial sensors, an infrared receiver, a debug port, push-buttons, LEDs, USB ports, and WyzBee THING™ expansion connector. The WiSeMCU module runs an embedded TCP/IP networking stack with SSL/TLS/HTTPS security, apart from complete Wi-Fi, BT 4.1, and ZigBee stacks. The expansion headers accommodate a host of other peripheral devices, with a number of peripherals – called ‘THINGs’ – already available from Redpine including audio, GSM, GPS, capacitive touch display, rechargeable battery, and additional sensors. Application development is supported with a choice of development environments and the Redpine hosted cloud framework offers flexible and customizable connectivity, analytics, and user interfaces.

WyzBee compatible THINGs can be added seamlessly with minimal effort in integrating hardware and software. We are also offering an Arduino compatible THING to facilitate effortless interoperability.

Typically, for someone to incorporate wireless capable hardware and integrate the associated software into their system can take anywhere between 2 to 8 months. WyzBee is already equipped with a multi-protocol wireless module, and comes with ready to use API’s. The time involved in integrating wireless to a system is thereby reduced considerably. WyzBee also comes with on board sensors and an IR receiver, which further reduce time and efforts involved in including sensing devices and control abilities into an existing system by mitigating the need to enter into the cycle of procurement, integration and testing altogether.WyzBee is a fully loaded platform using which a product can be taken to market with minimal effort and within a nominal amount of time
First – fundamental to any IoT device is connectivity; and as a first in the market, WyzBee platform natively incorporates all forms of wired and wireless interfaces. This saves potentially weeks of effort normally taken in integrating and optimizing a wireless interface into an embedded system.

Second – the WyzBee development environment integrates multiple steps in the device design process, and developers will be able to visualize and create the entire product in one flow – including the circuit, hardware, software, and cloud visualization.

Third – for the first time an IoT development platform does not stop at being that. The core computing and connectivity components of the WyzBee platform are available in a small, highly integrated module from Redpine. Developers will be able to proceed with their form-factor design with assured small size, low price, and exact functionality and performance that they have already experienced with the WyzBee platform.

The WyzBee platform has been in use extensively with the University of California at Davis since January 2015. It was used as the platform for carrying out hands-on exercises and projects by students of the Embedded Systems course there. Over 100 students and faculty have worked on the platform and have provided their experience and feedback – which have all gone into enhancing the utility of the product as well as the user experience. The platform has also been used at a few select Universities and Institutes, including the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, India.
The key issue here is, of course, communication. The industry wants to see interconnected devices being fully compatible with each other and with controllers on the cloud. Today, communication is achieved through a variety of standards – from down at the physical layer to network layer protocols. We think that this communication will always be heterogeneous, but this heterogeneity will not hamper the growth of the IoT. However, the industry is attempting to take steps in making it all easier – the Intel IoT Alliance is an example. Redpine will support these initiatives, but we also feel that IoT deployment will proliferate even within the current environment. For example, a sample application that we are giving away with the WyzBee platform is a Twitter based IoT application. Here, sensors Tweet their data, and actuators receive commands through Tweets. Imagine if the entire world of the IoT Tweeted – everything would straightaway talk to each other! Of course, this is a simplistic vision, but it’s something that is a great choice in a lot of scenarios. At the link level, we see that communicating over IP is close to being universal. And Redpine has made it easier for even simple devices to communicate natively over IP by providing energy efficient Wi-Fi that is fits in with all the constraints of such small, low cost devices.
The WyzBee code is open. The libraries and projects Redpine provided along with the platform includes all low level parameterization and optimization facilities. In the default architecture, the wireless stack and the networking stack resides within the connectivity device in the platform – the RS9113 module. However, other architectures are possible where the networking stack may be the user’s own or a third party’s – running on the MCU within the platform.
WyzBee platform, along with its vast selection of THINGS, is intended for a large variety of IoT applications. The architecture is extensible and additional THINGS can be added for specific applications. The base platform provides the computing power, wireless connectivity, cloud integration and application framework which can be used by any application. Among the THINGS provided are GPS, GSM/GPRS, audio, relay, power profiling and several sensor capabilities. These THINGS are targeted towards several home automation, smart energy, personal health care, medical and industrial applications. We provide 40 THINGS targeting many applications, with capability of users to create their own THINGS.
There are four major components of the WyzBee platform for costing purposes: Hardware, Cloud Software, Cloud Servers and Product Synthesis. For hardware, the customer pays based on the hardware that is purchased. For Cloud Software and Cloud Servers, we have a pricing model based on the number of devices, data storage and server calls. This is billed on a recurring basis. For product synthesis, there is a license and a maintenance fee. It helps the customers in creating their final designs at fraction of the time and cost.
Yes, we are planning to make our THING requirements public using which the users can create their own THINGS. However, these THINGS will have to be approved and integrated into the platform by Redpine. Since it is not possible for Redpine to create all possible combination of THINGS, this approach will help us in expanding the usage of WyzBee. However, we are also planning to develop a large portfolio of THINGS for several IoT applications.
Redpine has been selling its wireless products to IoT customers for several years. Over time, we realized the pain the customers have to go through to integrate hardware and software solutions from different companies. Most of the customers spend majority of their development time in completing the integration of basic components leaving little time for their core application. With WyzBee, we want customers to focus on their core strength and leave the rest to WyzBee. This will help them in launching highly differentiated products in a much shorter duration and at a much lower cost.
